ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn improved continuous process for the manufactureof polymers of ethylene in autoclave reactors with practicallycomplete back-mixing under pressure of from about 800 to about2500 bars in the presence of free-radical-generating initiatorsis provided wherein a) two autoclaves are connected in seriesin such a way that all the reaction product from the firstreactor is fed to the second reactor, b) each autoclave hasa length/diameter (L/D) ratio of from about 1:1 to about 3:1,c) the monomer(s) feed stream is divided between the tworeactors such that when the temperature/concentration and/orpressure environment in the first reactor is different fromthat in the second reactor, the monomer(s) reed stream to thefirst reactor is equal to or greater than the monomer(s) reedstream to the second reactor, d) the reaction temperatures inthe two autoclaves are set such that when the temperature inthe first reactor is different from that in the secondreactor, the temperature in the first reactor is lower thanthe temperature in the second reactor, e) the amount ofinitiator fed into each reactor being greater than 0
