ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe invention relates to a process for the productionof hydrophilic filaments or fibres having a sheath/corestructure, a porosity of at least 10 % and a water retentioncapacity of at least 10 % and having a fibre swelling factorwhich is lower than the water retention capacity. The processis carried out by spinning a solution of a fibre formingsynthetic polymer, especially an acrylonitrile polymer by thedry jet wet-spinning method wherein immediately on leaving thespinning jet and prior to coagulation in the precipitationbath the filaments or fibres are contacted with steam or withthe vapor of another coagulation initiating liquid which initiatescoagulation of the as yet unsolidified filaments, the filamentsthen being fully coagulated in a precipitation bath. The dryjet wet spinning process provides an highly porous andhydrophilic fibre by means of the steam or vapor of anotherliquid which is used as a first precipitation medium.
