CLASS OF ANALGESICS CONSISTING OF INHIBITORS OF BREAKDOWN OF ENDOGENOUS ENKEPHALIN AND/OR ENDORPHIN, AND COMBINATIONS OF SAID ANALGESICS WITH ANTIPYRETIC (ASPIRIN TYPE) DRUGS
CLASS OF ANALGESICS CONSISTING OF INHIBITORS OF BREAKDOWN OF ENDOGENOUS ENKEPHALIN AND/OR ENDORPHIN, AND COMBINATIONS OF SAID ANALGESICS WITH ANTIPYRETIC (ASPIRIN TYPE) DRUGS
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA new class of analgesics is provided by substancesthat inhibit breakdown of endogenous substances such asenkephalins and/or endorphins. Analgesia is obtained inanimals by inhibiting endogenous breakdown of enkephalins, orby internal injection of an inhibitor of enkephalin breakdownwhich itself serves as an analgesic. The analgesic effectof an enkephalin breakdown inhibitor is greatly enhanced bybeing combined with an Aspirin?-type drug. Specifically,D-phenylalanine as an enkephalin breakdown inhibitor providesexcellent analgesia in animals without developing toleranceor addiction in the animal. The injection of a combinationof D-phenylalanine and an Aspirin-like drug in an animalprovides a greatly enhanced analgesia approaching the analgesiaachieved by morphine.- 2 -
