ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA steam heated dryer drum having one or morespoiler bars secured against its inner shell wall to extendlongitudinally and substantially parallel with the axis ofrotation. The spoiler bars generate turbulence in thecondensate to lower the resistance to heat transfer throughthe shell wall. No screws, bolts, rivets or the like, whichwould necessitate penetration of the shell wall, are requiredor used to secure the bars. In one embodiment, the barsthemselves have a bridge-shaped cross sectional configurationand are made of a magnetic material. Their bridge legs formthe north and south poles of the magnetic bar and have theirends contoured to correspond to the drum shell radius ofcurvature. In another embodiment, magnets having a bridge-shaped cross section are used. These magnets'are of arelatively short, finite length which is considerably lessthan either the spoiler bar or the drum shell lengths andhave their inner bridge opening contoured to fit over andhold the spoiler bar which is non-magnetic and extendslongitudinally along the roll shell wall for as far asdesired. The magnets are then spaced along the bar so thatless magnetic material can be used.
