ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn apparatus for treating a water solution ofa waste material containing a salt with smelt-waterexplosion characteristics comprises an open-bottomedincinerator and a gas-liquid separator disposed beneaththe incinerator in fluid-flow communication therewith.The waste solution is sprayed into the incinerator andheated therein so that the salt in the solution is fused,water vaporized and organic components of the solutionburned. The combustion gases and water vapor flowdownwardly into the separator, while the fused salt formsa deposit on the inner surface of the incinerator andflows downwardly into the separator. At the junctionbetween the incinerator and separator, cooling wateris fed to the fused salt so that the deposit of saltis solidified and cracked into separate masses which falltogether with the cooling water onto an inclined bafflemember disposed in the separator and roll downwardlyon the baffle member. A flow of water is formed on thebaffle member to such a depth that the salt masses areonly partially dipped in the water and are substantiallycooled during its travel on the baffle member. Thegaseous mixture flowing from the incinerator into theseparator flows therethrough substantially horizontallyto a gas outlet formed in the separator above a liquidoutlet formed in the bottom of the separator.
