AbstractAn exercising machine includes a pair of inclined guide tracks oneach of which a foot-supporting member is arranged to slide frictionally, andthe foot-supporting members are interconnected by an elongate flexible ten-sion-bearing element, specifically a flat strap, which slides frictionallyover stationary guides. The machine allows a user to simulate the exerciseobtained while climbing stairs: the user stands with one foot on each foot-supporting member, and, by shifting his weight from one foot to the other,causes the foot-supporting members to rise and fall alternately, with thework done by the user being dissipated by the friction between the strap andthe stationary guides. The use of a friction arrangement in which the rub-bing surfaces are biased together by the user's weight gives the novel re-sult that the frictional resistance is automatically increased for heavierusers.
