ABSTRACTA patching composition for developing a superiorbond with silica refractories at temperatures of 649° to1316°C comprises three basic components: (1) a highmelting phase, such as silica brick, fireclay grog, magnesiaor high alumina grain, (2) a bonding component, such assodium silicate and (3) a low melting phase, such aswindow glass. It will generally be desirable to employa fourth component for fluxing, such as soda ash or otheralkaline earth compounds. The improved results areachieved by the use primarily, of a low melting phasesuch as window glass, bulk glass or lead glass having asoftening point of 482° to 954°C employed in an amountof 6 to 25% of the total solids composition.
