JessNicholas ZissimopoulosAbstract of the DisclosureA system for infusing fluids into the human bodyincludes a peristaltic-type metering apparatus which con-trols the flow of fluid through a disposable administra-tion set. The metering apparatus includes a control system,which allows the volume and rate of flow of the fluid to beinfused to be accurately preset by the operator. The controlsystem provides an alarm function in the event of malfunctionof the pump or occlusion of the tubing of the administrationset, and a minimum pumping rate for maintaining fluid flowthrough a system after the desired volume of fluid hasbeen infused. Novel power supply circuitry within the controlsystem renders the system immune to power line transients, andnovel bubble detector circuit provides for more reliabledetection of air bubbles in the tubing. A mechanical linkagebetween the pressure plate and downline flow restrictionlunger of the metering apparatus provides for convenientloading of the administration set and for automatic closureof the plunger prior to use.
