Apparatus including a mandrel 13 around which a continuous filament 14 is coiled and which has a guide channel formed longitudinally therein for slidably receiving a continuous core 12 to be positioned within the coil 14', and a holder 17 holding the mandrel 13 and reciprocating in the longitudinal direction in step with the formation of each convolution of the coil 14'. A unit length of the core required for each coil convolution is forcibly pulled away from a core payoff bobbin 24 by a pair of intermittently actuated rolls 25, 26. The holder 17 has passageways 27, 28 through which the core 12 travels from the roll pair 25, 26 to the entrance end of the guide channel in the mandrel 13. The passageways 27, 28 provide several obtuse-angled bends for holding the core 12 in frictional contact with the holder 17, so that the successive unit core lengths are delivered without tension to the guide channel in the mandrel 13 as holder 17 reciprocates.
