In gasification reactors, foam is removed from the area of the foaming zone by suction and recycled into the liquid area. For this purpose, a suction funnel is provided which is located in the area of the foaming zone above the liquid area and which is adjoined by a guide cylinder. In order to influence the foaming at least for the most part without the use of chemical additives and without significantly increasing the costs of energy, the reduced pressure causing the suction process is produced by introducing a flow of at least one of the fluids required for the reaction into a suction funnel; the fluid flow comprises the reaction gas added and/or the recycled reaction fluid. Suction funnel (10') and guide cylinder (10'') are advantageously combined in the form of a mixing nozzle (10) with an ejecting nozzle (9) to give a suction unit (8) which operates by the ejector principle; the fluid flow leaving the ejecting nozzle (9) produces a reduced pressure, which has the effect of removing foam from the foaming zone by suction.
