The device comprises locating means allowing the location of defective assemblies by detection of fission products in the cooling fluid. It consists of at least two independent localization modules (12, 14) and sampling lines (17, 24) associated with each of the assemblies and connected to the modules. For each of the core assemblies, there is at least one neighboring assembly, that is to say disposed in contact with the first assembly by means of one of its lateral faces, connected by its sampling pipe (24) to a localization module (14) different from the module (12) to which the first assembly is connected by its pipe (17). The invention applies, in particular, to fast neutron nuclear reactors cooled by liquid sodium.
