Uranium is recovered as ammonium diuranate by adding to an aqueous solution containing uranyl fluoride and HF sufficient aqueous ammonium hydroxide to bring the pH of the mixture to 6À1 Œ 0.2 and when the formation of ammonium fluoride is complete then adding sufficient aqueous ammonium hydroxide of a normality less than 3N to precipitate ammonium diuranate. When the solution contains about 4 molcules of HF per mole of uranyl ion the ammonium hydroxide in the first step is added in an amount such that 3À5 moles of NH 4 OH are present in the mixture per mole of UO 2 SP2+/SP. In the second addition 3 to 5 mols. of NH 4 OH per mol. UO 2 F 2 may be added.
