1311642 Hybrid co-polymers ROHM & HAAS CO 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 20382/71 Heading C3P So called " hybrid co-polymers " comprising a cross-linked macroreticular host copolymer, the pores of which contain a separately formed cross-linked filling copolymer, are made by polymerizing the monomers required to form the filling copolymer within the pores of the host copolymer. In the examples, beads of preformed divinyl benzene/styrene macroreticular host copolymers containing 2%, 3% or 20% divinyl benzene are suspended in water and a mixture of monomers and benzoyl peroxide are stirred into the water to allow absorption thereof into the pores of the beads, and the mixture then heated to effect polymerization. The following copolymers are thus produced within the beads in numbered examples:- (2-5, 12) 0À5% divinyl benzene/styrene, the products being chloromethylated by swelling in 1,2-dichloroethane and reaction with chlorornethyl methyl ether, followed by amination with trimethylamine; (9, 10) 4% divinyl benzene/styrene, the products being swollen in 1,2-dichloroethane, and then sulphonated and neutralized with NaOH; (11) 8% divinyl benzene/styrene, the products being swollen in either 1,2-dichloroethane or ethylene dichloride, and then sulphonated and neutralized with NaOH; (13) 10% divinyl benzene/methyl acrylate, the product being hydrolysed and then sulphonated; (14) 3% divinyl benzene/2-vinyl pyridine. The final products of Examples 2-5 and 9-12 are ion exchange resins.
