1364096 Methanol synthesis catalysts SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 1 Nov 1971 [2 Nov 1970 21 May 1971] 50649/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Methanol synthesis catalyst comprising oxides of copper and of zinc and of "didymium" (defined as any rare earth metal mixture free from a substantial amount of cerium and containing at least two other rare earth metals in a naturally-occurring ratio) may be prepared by a procedure wherein copper, zinc and "didymium" are co-precipitated in the form of compounds readily convertible to oxides, for example hydroxides and/or basic carbonates and/or carbonates, from solution, for example nitrate solution, and the resulting co-precipitate is collected, washed, dried, calcined at a temperature of from 200 to 400‹C to convert the convertible compounds into oxides, shaped for example by pelletizing under pressure using graphite as lubricant and, optionally, treated with hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The catalyst maycontain copper oxide and zinc oxide in a copper:zinc weight ratio of from 1:0.05 to 1:10 and from 1 to 25 weight per cent of "didymium" oxide, calculated as metal; the catalyst additionally may comprise inert support material, for example silica or alumina.
