1478121 Radiography EMI Ltd 4 July 1974 [21 July 1973] 34859/73 Heading H4F A radiographic apparatus comprises a source 9 of X or gamma radiation arranged to produce a sectoral swath 10 of radiation passing through a body to be examined held within a flexible hose 1 forming part of a water-filled reservoir 2, the emergent radiation being divided into a set of spaced beams by collimators 15 each containing a scintillator 14 connected by a flexible lightguide 17 to a photomultiplier 18 providing a beam signal for processing, the source 9, collimators 15 and the detecting system 14, 17, 18 being rotatable about the object on a turntable 13 driven by a motor 11 and the collimators 15 being reciprocable in direction 24A relative to the source 9 by a motor 26 and a crank 24 so as to bring the passages of the collimators 15 into positions previously occupied by the walls of the collimators, thereby obtaining beam transmission information which would otherwise be lost. The reciprocation of the collimators 15 can take place continuously during rotation of turntable 13 or at 180 or 360 degree steps. The scintillators 14 and photomultipliers 18 may be reciprocated with the collimators or may be stationary if they are sufficiently large to cover the movement of the collimators. A shutter may be provided between the source 9 and the body to define the incident radiation as a set of beams, this shutter being moved in synchronism with the collimators.
