Square billets are rolled to a round cross-section in a single pass with a large reduction ration by planetary skew rolling. This is immediately followed by one pass through a universal rolling mill in which it is stretch-reduced on two opposite sides in two directions shifted through 90 degrees and deformed to the desired flat surfaced shape. This requires a minimum of rolling mill stands and requires no fixed roll pass grooves for the great variety of cross-section sizes with which it can deal.
