Openings in walls or ceilings of nuclear reactor buildings which are left for the subsequent assembly or dismantling of major components are closed by lining the frame of the opening with an L-shaped layer of lead. Stacks of several metal plates of equal size are held inside the frame by nuts and bolts. This is a less time consuming operation than laying or removing brickwork and reduces the radiation exposure to the personnel. It is free from the creation of dust which is inevitable when brickwork has to be removed.
