In the prodn. of synthetic TiO2 by direct dissolution of natural rutile and complex Ti ores and slags contg. rutile with H2SO4 as water-soluble Ti sulphate, the ore, concentrate or slag is first subjected to mechanical activation by crushing, mainly by impact, to alter the crystal lattice structure. Changes in the crystal lattice structure caused by very fine milling make it possible to dissolve otherwise insol. rutile in the same way as ilmenite. The prod. is useful in the mfr. of pigments and of TiCl4 for metal mfr..
