Broad-band directional dipole aerial - has diverging elements arranged on either side of insulation plate

The planes of each aerial half (1,2) lie parallel on opposite sides of an insulation plate (9). Over part of their length, the two parts are superimposed (3,4) and then diverge following their respective centre lines (5,7; 5,8). The plane area also increases until, at the extreme ends, the aerial elements (1,2) are rounded off. The aerial feeder enters at a point (4) close to that where the divergence begins. The shape and divergence of the elements gives the broad width characteristics. The directionality can be enhanced by adding reflectors on each side. The broad band width aerial finds applications in radar transponders and similar circuits.
