The ultrasonic apparatus has a head, coupled to a transmitter and a receiver, which can be energised into a preset pulse train via the transmitter. The received echo signals are derived for representation by a display or evaluation appts. Behind the receiver is connected a signal converter with a correlator (26), having inputs for an echogram of the received echo signals, and for a reference pattern consisting of a preset acoustic pattern respectively. From the input signals are generated correlation signals displayed on the display (4) or supplied to an evaluation device. Pref. the echogram can be scanned in sectional step for correlation of its sonic pattern with the preset one. The signals representing the instantaneous correlation degree are displayed or evaluated. The reference pattern may consist of a part of an echo pattern, obtained under known conditions.
