Unsatd. polyesters are prepd. by reacting a polycarboxylic acid component (I) contg. at least 25 mol.% maleic acid (II) with 50-200 mol. dicyclopentadiene (III) per 100 mol. (I) at 90-150 deg. C to form a prod. (IV) contg. at least 25 mol. % maleic acid have ester of dicyclopentyl alcohol and reacting (IV) with 25-100 polyol (mixts.) per 100 mol. (I) at least 180 deg. C until the acid number of the resulting unsatd. polyester is less than 55. The polyesters contain increased amts. of (III). The resin can be used as a laminating resin. (I) pref. contains at least 50 mol.% (II). (I) is pref. reacted with 60-160 esp. 80-120 mol. (III) per 100 mol. (I) and (IV) has an acid number less than 250 and pref. contains at least 45 mol.% maleic acid hermester of dicyclopentyl alcohol. (II) is prepd. by reacting maleic anhydride with an at least stoichiometric amt. of water. The unsatd. polyester pref. has a Gardner-Holcht viscosity of at least H as a 30% soln. in xylene. Hardenable liq. compsns. comprise 40-80 pts. wt. unsatd. polyester and 20-60 pref. 25-50 pts. wt. monomer. Polyols include (di)ethylene-, propane- and butane diol.
