A matrix display system utilises two pole display elements interconnected to minimise external connections and to minimise the possibility of cross-talk between cells. The display definition is increased and the number of elements within a given area is increased. For a 2x2 matrix has element cells (11,12,21,22) formed between the row (Z1) and column (S1) interfaces. The condition of each element depends upon the applied voltage, e.g. the change in one element (11) is produced by a potential difference between (Z1,S1) with the line potential (Z1) being applied to all cells in the row. The selection cycle consists of firstly loading the specific cell and then discharging other cells in the row.
