A surface layer (34) of a natural or artificially produced mineral formation is bonded to a support material e.g. muslin (32) by means of a sprayed (3) liquid binding agent. The support material and the surface layer of the formation bonded to it are then dried. The dried support material and the visible facing bonded to it are then removed from the remainder of the formation. (1). For preparing a natural mineral surface, e.g. from a bed of sand, natural formation is first exposed. A casing of a vessel with an open end is pushed onto the formation and is closed, e.g. by a slide plate. The vessel together with the piece of natural material enclosed in it is then removed, transported to a workshop and the surface of the natural material is opened and treated as before.
