The inlet and exit ends of the kiln are provided with at least one door; and a row of kiln cars travel along rails on the base of the kiln. The row of kiln cars divides the kiln into a longitudinal upper zone (I), and a longitudinal lower zone (II). A heat transfer medium streams along both zones (I,II). Transverse baffles are pref. located in zone (II) to reduce the flow of the heat transfer medium along this zone (II); and the baffles are pref. located on the underside of the kiln cars. The heat transfer medium is e.g. air flowing through an inlet duct at the exit end of the kiln. The flow of air along zone (II) prevents the entry of external and unwanted cold air into the kiln. Such cold or "false" air impairs temp. control in the kiln.
