A typewriter has an optical facility to identify specific locations of characters as an aid in the fitting of forms or positioning for corrections. The optical facility (9) consists of a light source, fitter and focussing lens to direct a marker (10) onto the surface of the paper that is fed over the roller (2). The marker is located in relation to a base line and is set into a window (5) to indicate the position of impact by the print hammer. In the case of a golf ball typewriter the optical beam facility is duplicated and are set to gain access around the ball. Both units are focussed onto the impact spot.
