Tri:chloromethyl-substd. benzaldehyde derivs. - and their stable cyclic glycol acetal derivs., used as photoinitiators and photoinitiator intermediates

New CCl3-substd. benzaldehydes and their storage-stable cyclic glycol acetals respectively have formulae (I) and (II). In the formulae R is H or CCl3. Cpds. (I) and (II) where (1) R is H and the CCl3 gp. is in the m- or p-position to the aldehyde- or acetal gp. or (2) R is CCl3 and both CCl3 gps. are in the 3- and 5-position to the aldehyde- or acetal gp., are specifically claimed. The prepn. of (I) and (II) from 2-methoxyethyl esters of CCl3-substd. benzoic acid and the prepn. of (I) from CCl3-substd. benzonitriles or benzoyl halides is claimed. Cpds. (I) are used as photo-initiators acting under short-wave light and also as intermediates for the prepn. of new oxazole-based photo-initiators.
