Welded mitred joint for light alloy profiles - uses intermediate plate with locating bosses firmly connected to both profiles

The mitred joint between two pieces of hollow light alloy profiles (1,2) of complicated cross-section can be made without the need for close tolerance observation. For this purpose an intermediate plate (3) of weldable light alloy is used for joining. The plate has a number of bosses, stamped out of its surface, which are aligned with the inner surfaces of the profiles along a section inclined at 45 deg. The lengths of the profiles, which are to be joined, are fitted over the bosses on opposite sides of the plate. Each profile is then welded to the plate by the light arc process without the use of a filler rod. This method of welding requires little or no finish machining.
