The suspension system for a refuse bag uses two arms (9,10) forming a scissor linkage, which are swung apart by rotating about a common vertical axis (14) formed by a hinge pin. One arm (9) has an extension (7) beyond the hinge point, which is secured to a container wall (12), or support, by screws (11) or rivets. The other arm (10) has an extension (8) forming a gripping or pressure member to swing the two arms apart for access to the interior of the bag. At the junction point between an arm and its extension is a curved part with lugs (4) projecting outwards to carry the hinge pin. Attached to the interior surfaces of these curved junctions is a curved leaf spring (13) secured to the fixed extension, acting as a return spring to close the bag. Both extensions are wider than the two arms, the latter being inserted into the folded over top edges of the bag, for easy removal. These edges carry a draw cord for sealing after use.
