The engine (1) is connected to an automatic gearbox (3) through a hydraulic clutch (2). In addition to a hydrodynamic tongue converter, the gearbox has epicyclic gear trains with band brakes and clutches (6-9) to change the overall ratio. The crankshaft is extended (4a) on the side opposite the hydraulic clutch to a mechanical clutch (13) which is operated by a servo mechanism. The mechanical clutch can couple the engine to a flywheel (14). The engine is switched off under braking conditions, when the vehicle tends to drive the engine. It is restarted by coupling to the flywheel. This permits the engine to be switched off over a wider range of conditions.
