Washing machine drum - has controlled water feeds and drum speeds to ensure saturation with reduced water consumption

On loading the washing machine the horizontal drum rotates at a speed to give a centrifugal force at the drum mantle of 0.2-0.6 g, and the water is fed in until the laundry has absorbed the maximum amount of 45-100 per cent of the volume. During the washing cycle the drum is rotated and then at the end the drum is accelerated for a sufficient period to extract a given volume of washing fluid. This spin drying is repeated to extract a further fluid volume. For the rinsing phase, clear water is fed in by the same amount as for washing, and the drum rotates at the same speed as in the washing cyccle. The drum speed is accelerated for spin drying between rinsing cycles. The process ensures that the washing fluid penetrates into the fabric structure, while reducing water consumption.
