The equipment lifts containers etc., from floor level onto a chain conveyor (21). It is mounted on the chassis of a carriage (11) which travels between the two sides of the conveyor. At the front of the carriage is a vertical mast (14) with a travelling member (29) with lifting forks projecting forwards, to pass under a pallet at floor level at the end of the conveyor, and then lowers it onto the conveyor after travelling backwards. The carriage includes a drive so that its wheels can travel along rails on the floor between the sides of the conveyor, and another drive for lifting the vertically travelling member. When this member is in its lowered position, the whole equipment is below the level of the top surfaces of the conveyor.
