Underground agricultural irrigation system - uses horizontal perforated pipes from which water seeps into soil

The irrigation system causes water to seep into the ground, using underground pipes (1-5) which are porous or not sealed together where they join. The water seeping into the earth rises to the surface by capillary action. The pipes are not laid with any fall, so that they do not act as drains, and seepage takes place from them over their whole length. They can be arranged to rise slightly at the ends, so that the water collects centrally and is there delivered into the earth. The pipes may be laid in loose ballast, the water first filling up the intervening spaces before reaching the earth.
