Cable end connector for high voltage applications - has insulated voltage measuring electrode between earth sheath and cable core

The connector includes a flexible insulation sheath (1) with a screening electrode (2) at high potential and a stress grading electrode (3) at earth potential. Near the outer perimeter of the insulation is an earthed metallic sheath (4). The measuring electrode (5) is a resistor made of material with a high dielectric loss. It is placed in the axial gap between screen (2) and grading shield (3), and just inside the earth sheath (4). The electrode is connected by a wire (6) to a terminal (7) at the end of the connector. The voltage measurement is distortion free as the lead (6) occupies a screened space. Variations in electrode resistance can be compensated by calculation or by measurement against a reference electrode. A typical electrode material is a metal oxide.
