The surgical drainage tube (1) such as could be used for body cavities after surgery, e.g. a knee joint, has a diluent injected or pumped into it, so as to reduce the danger of blockage and frequency replacement. Attached to the tube near the insertion point is a sleeve (3) bent into a shallow Z-shape to bend the tube so that a cannula (2) can be inserted into the bent part. The cannula is then supported by a strap (5) bridging the two parallel tubes. The drainage tube is connected to a suction pump (9) and collector vessel (10), while the cannula is connected to an automatically operated pressure pump (7), e.g. of peristaltic type, and liquid supply vessel.
