Flow of a selected gaseous species across an elastomeric bipolar membrane is controlled by wetting the membrane, introducing the species to one side of the membrane and adjusting the magnitude of an electric field applied across the membrane to selectively regulate the flow of the species across the membrane. Used for sepg. a mixt. of gaseous species using the membrane as a molecular sieve. By adjusting the magnitude of the electric field the membrane can be controlled to selectively pass one species while rejecting others in a mixt.
