The rotary rod (2) or tube paring machine (1) comprises a driven hollow shaft (5,49) carried in bearings (3,4) and provided, at one end, with a cutter head (6) having slots in which carriers (20) for paring cutters (7,8) are radially movable. This movement is effected by pins (54,55) on the carriers (20) engaging spiral slots (10,11) in a bush (21). Relative rotation between head and bush is provided by a motor (32) with gear transmission (28) to an (oval) planet gear assembly (9, 50,15), rotatable on the shaft (5). External teeth mesh with internal teeth (57,58) in a collar (49) of the shaft (5,49) and in the bush (48). The ring gears (57,58) have different numbers of teeth to provide a large reduction ratio (e.g. 1:100).
