In a new procedure for the analysis of protein subunits by means of thin-layer electrophoresis using aq. polyacrylamide, gels coated onto elastic foils, the gels contain substd. urea derivs. in which the H-atoms are wholly or partially replaced by 1-4C alkyl gps. The urea derivs. exert a chaotropic effect on protein molecules, but do not form cyanate ions in water and do not crystallise out at low-temps. They are effective at lower concns. than previous chaotropic agents; thus, tetramethylurea in a concn. of only 50 g/l causes complete dissociation of haemoglobin into its subunits.
