In the continuous homogenisation and pelletisation of crude cellulose ethers, followed by drying, a cellulose ether with 35-45wt.% moisture content is subjected to the effects of cutting, shock and shear and homogenised, then pelletised and finally dried. Opt., the cutting, shock and shear action is carried out at the same time as the pelletisation. The moisture content may be adjusted by use of hot gases, e.g. air or N2, by addn. of water, or by addn. of superheated steam with simultaneous drying. Finely divided alkali salts may be mixed with the cellulose ether, to act as extenders, and to reduce the active content of the ether. The process is simple, and economical in appts. and energy. The particles are uniform, and their structure and density are controllable and can be adjusted w.r.t. the drying process.
