Clad strip made by horizontal continuous casting and rolling - where metal strip is made into rectangular box filled with molten metal and then hot:rolled into clad strip
Metal strip (I) is fed from a coil through forming rolls to make a channel with a rectangular, U-shaped cross-section. A second strip (II) is fed from a coil to make a lid welded to channel (I), to form a box surrounding and travelling past a pouring chute. A metal (III) is poured from a melting furnace through a holding furnace into the chute. The moving box forms a mould filled with metal (III) which solidifies and bonds with the box to make a composite billet. The billet is fed through a high-performance, cycloidal rolling mill to make strip (III) with a cladding (I,II) on all four sides. Continuous prodn. of metal strip where an inexpensive core material is clad on all four sides with an expensive core material such as stainless steel, so the cost of the clad strip is less than when it is made entirely of an expensive metal.
