The device includes a support lance at the working end of which are mounted a holder and a torch mounting which can be oscillated transversely w.r.t. the holder. The holder and the torch mounting are coupled together by a drive element which moves in the longitudinal direction of the support lance and effects the transverse oscillation. The device is esp. useful for weld deposition of a wear resistant metal layer on the inside of long (e.g. 2-4 m), relatively small dia. (e.g. 200 mm) pipes. The welding torch is oscillated without the whole device being oscillated so that process control is facilitated.
