The fully automated press for sheet metal plates in vehicle manufacturing plant uses an automatic lubricating device for coating the plates ready for pressing. The device consists of a holder (3) covered with a plastics foam layer (5) over which is secured an applicator plate (7) with a pattern of distributor openings (8). Oil is supplied to the foam layer by supply lines (15,17). The applicator plate also carries electromagnets so that, when placed over a plate assisted by guide strips (19), it can be lifted and conveyed to the press. Pressure causes the oil to be squeezed through the openings, then the current is switched off so that the plate, coated with lubricant is ready for pressing.
