The oceangoing sailing ship has one or more centreline masts, each in the form of a rectangular frame inside which a sail can be spread which pref. stows in a roll along the bottom of the frame. The foot of these masts is now made rotatable relative to the hull, and within their frame-portion, at least on the leeward side, there are regularly-spaced tensioned members against which the wind presses the sail. Members may be vertical or horizontal; in the latter case they may carry rollers, pref. of synthetic material.
