Coal dust and firedamp explosions in mines are fought by using trough barriers filled with water contg., by wt., 0.1-2% anion- active surfactant and 0.1-5 (0.4-3.5)% electrolyte as wetting agent. The surfactant can be an alkyl sulpho-succinate, alkyl sulphate or alkylbenzene sulphonate.The electrolyte can be an alkali- or alkaline earth metal chloride or sulphate. Wetting velocity, measured as the time needed to apply 10 g. coal dust on 200 cc. soln., is reduced by adding the electrolyte in addn. to surfactant. The flame-front can be extinguished even at high shock-pressures, whereby the explosion is controlled.
