Casting assembly has an inflatable, elastomeric collar which surrounds metal exiting from the mould. The collar is initially in a deflated condition to allow the butt end of an ingot or billet to pass through without contact. The collar is subsequently inflated to effect contact with the ingot or billet so as to remove coolant from the surfaces of the metal casting. Coolant is removed from continuous or semicontinuous direct drill cast prods. partic. light metal prods. such as Al. Coolant removed by the collar is directed away from the metal surfaces by a trough or conduit arrangement to prevent further contact with the casting.
