Large area open tube for counting radio active contamination. An insulating housing is partitioned by a sintered metal or porous conducting synthetic material wall so that a count gas collection area is formed behind it on the output of the gas inlet tube. On the open front of the, typically 75 mm x 75 mm wall are two wiring arrays of grid wires and anode wire which, in combination, serve to limit the count volume available on the open front of the tube. The count gas inlet reaches into the centre of the gas collection area where pressure builds up and gas exudes through the pores of the sintered metal wall to form an homogenous area inside the grids. A very small zero effect is achieved.
