The approaching end of a pouring operation from a casting ladle with a bottom taphole is indicated by measuring a characteristic property of the outflowing metal stream and by basing the identification of the metal-to-slag transition on a change of this characteristic. The preferred characteristics is the oxygen content of the melt which is measured continuously. An abrupt change is the criterion for the transition.S Contrary to optical devices, this device responds also to slag which travels inside the metal stream and gives a timely warning.
