Appts. for building up large cylindrical workpieces, by weld deposition on a horizontal cylindrical substrate, has a number of welding heads arranged on a straight line which is parallel with the axis of the substrate. The welding heads are moved along this line as the substrate is rotated slowly continuously or in a number of individual steps corresp. to the number of welding heads. Appts. is simplified and down-time is reduced, since only the distance of the welding heads from the rotational axis of the workpiece has to be increased as the workpiece dia. increases, and all the welding heads operate in the most desirable position, i.e. the Zenith of the workpiece periphery.
