The solid state monitoring unit is used as part of an isometric muscle exercise unit. The unit is of the 'expander' type that involves the use of both hands. The hand grips (54,55) are coupled to a load cell unit that has a piezo-electric transducer (18). The transducer output is amplified (30) and is compared (31) with a potentiometer (42) set level. When the set level is exceeded a counter is triggered (32) and an alarm (36) activated. A digital display (34) records the number of times the set level is exceeded. A set training routine may be established and the unit used to monitor performance.
