The press handles chip, fibre or sheet type material, forming them into briquettes of permanent shape. The press has a reciprocating plunger with a receiver chamber provided in the path of the plunger. The drive of the press plunger (23) and the control system (31) is fitted with indirectly coupled hydraulic motors (12,60) connected to the same hydraulic source. During the pressing operation the inlet (55) of the receiver chamber (56) works together with an enclosed locking device (49a). Between the feed mechanism (3) and the receiver chamber (56), a tamping device (4) with a plunger (49) is provided which closes up the receiver chamber (56) in its terminal position (49a) following a compacting stroke. The feed mechanism is controlled in dependence of the load handled by the tamping device.
