Non-destructive capillary process testing with penetration indicator - contg. di:aryl paraffin, indicator, solvent, opt. surfactant and corrosion inhibitor

Penetration-indicator compsn. for the non-destructive capillary process testing of materials comprises at least one diaryl-paraffin, (I) contg. 2 or more C atoms in paraffin chain, in addn. to at least 1 indicator and a solvent. The compsn. contains by wt. 0.2-6% indicator, 93.5-0.5% solvent, and 0.5-99.3% (I). The compsn. can be modified by adding a surfactant and opt. a corrosion-inhibitor. Pref. modified compsns. contain (a) 0.2-6% indicator, 1-90% solvent, 2-41.3% (I) and 2-57.5% surfactant or (b) 0.2-6% indicator, 0.5-90.5% solvent, 1-70% (I), 2-19.3% surfactant and 0.5-10% corrosion-inhibitor. (I) are esp. ditolyl-ethane, di-m-xylyl-ethane, dicumyl-ethane and ditolyl-isobutane. The surfactant can be a mixt. of mono- and dialkylphenol polyethylene glycol ethers. The corrosion inhibitor can be a mixt. of cyclohexylamine and fatty acids, alkylamine or polyethylene glycol. The indicator can be (a) a luminophore (e.g. 1,8-naphthoylene- 1',2'-benzimidazole) or (b) a fat-soluble dye. The compsns. are used to detect defects, e.g. in metals for turbine-, aeroplane- and ship-building, and also in glass, ceramic and plastic articles. The addn. of (I) improves indicator sensitivity, increases adhesiveness and reduces fire hazard and toxicity.
